DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT
The interference in nature and landscape resulting from the construction of the A 38 federal motorway (southern bypass Leipzig) was to be made up by compen­sation and substitution measures which were realised in the immediate and in the broader environs of the motorway. The following measures were implemented: Compensation for the cutting up of a biological habitat by the design of substitutional habitats (amphibian spawning grounds), design of vernal-autumnal ponds, appropriate hedges for the habitat, field coppice as well as orchards with regional fruit varieties, construction of clearance cairns, appli­cation of coarse woody debris, conception of succession areas and sowing of mixed meadow seeds.

Two years after the completion of the measures a success control was conducted and it was stated that the biotopes were accepted and populated by different groups of species.
PROJECT COMPONENTS AND
TECHNICAL DATA
  • Redesigning of former agricultural acreages in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt on an area of about 40 ha.
  • Planting of about 30.000 plants (coppice, shoots, deciduous trees, fruit trees), planning and design of: 2 permanently aquiferous spawning ponds for amphibians, 7 vernal-autumnal ponds, ditches, field coppice, hedges, fruit trees and extensive meadows.
  • Construction, operation and supervision of mobile guidance installations for amphibians as well as a "spawning prison" to encourage spawning in the newly designed spawning grounds, co-operation with the German nature conservation organisation "Naturschutzbund Deutschland, LV Sachsen".
