Noise control scheme for the town of Saarlouis / Germany

DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT
The noise situation of the town of Saarlouis is marked by numerous noise sources. The existing road network is to be considered the most important noise source. Several motorways (A8, A620) and federal highways (B51, B269, B405) run close to the city area or even cross it. Further noise nuisance comes from the railway line Dillingen-Saarbrücken and from the industrial zone situated north of the city area. Smaller commercial zones are spread over the city area.

To reduce the noise pollution for the inhabitants, the city of Saarlouis commissioned the development of noise abatement plans for residential areas and other sensitive areas in accordance with the provisions of Germany's Federal Immission Control Act. By means of dispersion models the current noise conditions for the different noise sources (road and rail traffic, industrial/commercial activities, sport and recreational activities) as well as for the overall noise level were presented on noise immission maps. Fichtner WT then developed a special concept for traffic, the main source of noise nuisance, designed to substantially reduce the emissions within the town of Saarlouis. The established concept includes traffic calming and canalisation, the establishment of local routes for heavy goods vehicles, as well as active and passive noise abatement measures. In co-operation with ATP Axel Thös Planung, Saarbrücken.
PROJECT COMPONENTS AND
TECHNICAL DATA
  • Traffic survey as a basis for determining the noise nuisance caused by road traffic
  • Industrial noise level measurements
  • Use of computer-aided noise dispersion models to determine the area- and space-related noise impacts
