 Tramway line on Schwarzwaldstraße, Freiburg
DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT The tramway line 1 in Freiburg runs across the city centre and connects the eastern district of Littenweiler with the western district of Landwasser. The tramway line is one of the most frequently used lines in Freiburg. In the "Schwarzwaldstrasse", the tramway used to run on a street-level track that was also used by individual traffic. Two tramway stops were situated on traffic islands that could hardly be accessed by disabled persons. Traffic relocation measures (construction of a tunnel on the federal road B31) provided the opportunity to redesign the traffic network in eastern Freiburg. This new design included the realisation of a continuous track line completely segregated from the other traffic and the barrier-free extension of the two tramway stops "Alter Messplatz" and "Stadthalle". Furthermore, pedestrian access to the tramway stops was facilitated. The existing pedestrian/ bicycle undercrossing was rebuilt and adapted to the new structures. Track spacing on the entire section was optimised and the catenary system completely replaced. The design also included bicycle lanes on both sides along the entire street as well as parking lanes.
