DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT
The construction of the new weir at Rheinfelden is combined with the future removal of the hydroelectric power plant in front of the Degussa AG factory compound, which will result in a reduced water impoundment upstream of the power plant. As a result, the water of the river Rhine will be out of reach for the river water intake structure of the factory's existing cooling water pumping station.

As on the one hand, the reconstruction of the power plant's headrace serves the improvement of the passage of fish and other aquatic organisms and as on the other hand, a remaining discharge of only 10 to 30 m³/s can be used for this purpose, the location for the new cooling water intake has to be transferred. Several locations and methods have to be considered in the reconstruction design of the intake structure.

Degussa AG commissioned Fichtner WT GmbH with the elaboration of a feasibility study for the development of possible options and a more detailed analysis of these options with regard to technical and economic aspects. The study resulted in the selection of 2 options, which were analysed in more detail during the following baseline planning.
