Archangelsk
DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT
Anthropogenic activity has caused pollution of surface waters – large lakes and rivers - in the northwestern region of Russia, which has been a traditional source of drinking water for cities and built-up areas.

The project activities included investigations, recommendations and implementation of operations to improve the drinking water by firstly establishing the causes for the deterioration of the raw water and potable water over the last 20 years, followed by recommendations on improvement and supporting measures.

The project location being Arkhangelsk, its results have also been applied to other Northwestern "oblasts" in the Russian Federation, i.e. Leningrad, Pskov, Kaliningrad and Murmansk Oblasts and the Republic of Karelia.

The final beneficiaries from this project are the population in Arkhangelsk and the population in Northwest Russia. Regulatory organizations such as Epidemiological Surveillance Service and the Ministry of Natural Resources have been provided with technical and operational support, staff training and capacity building.
