Optimisation of the drinking water supply system
of San Salvador / El Salvador
New pumping station El Jabalí
New pumping station El Jabalí
DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT
The aim of the project was to augment the water supply in the northern production area of the capital San Salvador and to increase the reliability of the network. To this end, the existing pumping stations, trunk mains between the sources and the connecting points to the distribution network (water reservoirs) as well as the reservoirs themselves were adjusted accordingly. Under the project the hydraulic capacities of all pumping stations concerned, related pipelines and water reservoirs were evaluated with regard to the increased future water supply demand and design alternatives for the necessary rehabilitations and/or extensions were developed and compared. Subsequently, structural and final designs were worked out for the selected design alternative.
PROJECT COMPONENTS AND
TECHNICAL DATA
  • main pumping station of the northern sector: Q = 2,000 l/s, manometric lift of 250 m
  • major trunk main:
    Ø 48" of 3 km length
  • San Ramón pumping station:
    Q = 1,600 l/s
  • Escalón A pumping station:
    Q = 700 l/s
  • new pumping station El Jabalí:
    Q = 400 l/s, see picture above
  • wellfield collectors from the 3 deep wells to the pumping station El Jabalí
  • 4 water reservoirs up to 20,000 m³ total capacity

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Optimisation of the existing wells, pumping stations, trunk mains and water reservoirs of that part of the drinking-water supply network called "Zona Norte" of the capital city of San Salvador as a supplement to an ongoing rehabilitation measure
