DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT
The Krotzenburg weir at the river Main is operated by the Federal Water and Shipping Administration. The weir is composed of three openings with fish belly flap gates, two locks for seagoing vessels and a boat lock.

Within the scope of an expression of interest procedure for the construction and operation of a hydroelectric power plant, a feasibility study was elaborated analysing the technical, ecological and economic feasibility of different options. The study included the following aspects: definition of the average annual power production, development of technical concepts for hydropower utilisation with integration of the plant in the existing weir and lock system, improvement of passage of fish and other aquatic organisms, description of the execution of works and economic and financial considerations.

The preferred solution included the construction of a submersible power plant, placed under the left weir opening. Negative impacts on the flood discharge, the lock operation and the built-up areas along the riverbank can be thus circumvented. In order to assure the passage of fish and other aquatic organisms, the integration of a vertical-slot fish passage on the left bank is envisaged.
