Damietta locks / Egypt
Lock near Delta
Lock near Delta
DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT
The construction of the Aswan High Dam, which started in 1960 and fully finished 10 years later, resulted in a major change of the flow conditions of the Nile and also of the Damietta Branch, a major branch of the Nile. One of the consequences of this change was the marked reduction in navigability. The objective of the project was to work out different design alternatives for restoring the navigability of the Damietta Branch over a length of 220 km.

At the time of project implementation there were two weirs with locks built in 1930: one near Zifta, the other near Delta. In addition, there was an earth-fill dam at Faraskour. It was planned to provide each of these structures with a new lock designed to accommodate modern vessels of 11 m width and 160 m length. Under the project several design alternatives were worked out, among which the following design solution was favoured: Construction of two new locks near Delta and Zifta and a third weir with a lock at El Mansoura. For this option a final design was worked out.
PROJECT COMPONENTS AND
TECHNICAL DATA
  • dimensions of the locks: 12 m wide and 170 m long
  • outer harbours and landing places upstream and downstream
  • equipment of the locks with mitering gates, ship impact protection devices and emergency gates
  • steel structures: 570 tonnes
  • pile foundation for the El Mansoura lock
  • two options for the weir at El Mansoura: rubber dam or fish belly flap gate weir
