Flood control reservoir Dietenbach near the city of Umkirch / Germany

Flood control reservoir
DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT
The flood control reservoir Dietenbach protects the municipalities of Umkirch and Gottenheim against flood events. Because of the deficient flood protection level of downstream riparian areas, covering only flood events < Q50, a safety adjustment has become necessary.

In a first phase, a safety report was prepared and a detailed safety assessment was realised. Within the scope of a study of variants, different scenarios for the rehabilitation of the reservoir were investigated. During these investigations, the Consultant had to ensure the hydraulic and geotechnical upgrade of the reservoir and had to keep in mind the plans of the German Railways Company to lead the new line of the Rhine Valley Line in a way that challenges the existing design for the flood discharge.

The study of variants showed that a modified approach consisting in the construction of a new structure assuring both, operating discharge and flood evacuation, is preferable.
