DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT The State Agency for Flood Defence and Water Management of Saxony-Anhalt, River Development Section Halberstadt, decided the implementation of a flood defence measure in the area of the "Neue Welt" road in Stassfurt, since the 1994 flood event had shown that there was no sufficient protection in this area against flooding from the local "Bode" river. The built-up area along the river leaving only a restricted space for the provision of a flood defence facility, a comparative study of alternate solutions finally opted for the erection of a flood protection wall. In the design of that structure, particular consideration was given to its harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape (including the possibility of subsequent greening) and to the building technology. With a view to keeping the areal requirements as low as possible and also reducing noise nuisance to neighbouring housing areas and a hospital to the minimum possible, a sheet piling was chosen for the wall foundation. The construction of the flood protection wall necessitated the new design of the internal drainage system, which in case of a flood event must be operable by means of a pumping station.
